Do you think that kids should be able to choose what they learn at school?
I don't think kids should be able to choose what they learn at school because how would we learn? Most kids won't want to learn at all but I liked school. Do you think that kids should be able to choose what they learn at school?
This is another interesting question, Jen. I think it depends on the age of the kid, Jen. The very young children shouldn't choose what they can or cannot learn in school but as they become mature and know what kind of career they want to choose, then I think they should be able to choose. I believe most subjects taught in school are useful for all of our lives, except the history lesson which content with many useless numbers to be memorized by young children! I love study history but to memorizing the years etc...is not fun at all. But I think it is important to learn many things from history, so we don't need to make the same mistake again, if we can.
I think the kids should be able to choose the sports they play. But for academics, adults should set most of the curriculum, because you are right, not many kids would have the discipline to learn. Once they become a little more mature and figure out if they are more into math, or more into science, from that point on they should start to be able to elect certain courses. In my high school, I was able to choose to do Math and Calculus in grade 12 instead of history and social studies. And that for me was a valuable decision as it set my path towards a university major in business and finance
It depends on the kid Jen. Some kids are mature enough to make decisions for themselves. Others are not. I think I was in the latter category. So I think you are right, kids should have to learn what adults decide until they're old enough to make their own decisions. Maybe that's not until university.
I do think that once the basics are covered, high school students should be able to have a choice so they can try out different things before choosing their path after graduation. It might help them decide to work or go to trade school or university.
