Thoughtful question Jen! $50 does not go very far nowadays but every little bit helps. Giving is important, everyone should give. Few do. Your grandmother educated us to give, to be generous. Her grandmother encouraged her the same way. You should read MIR, the story of Granny Rogers, she was granted an Order of the British Empire for her work with charity. It is not the amount you give it is the % of your income. I give 5-10% of my net income to various charities, some years more than others. My brothers and I just gave another large chunk to our old school, Glenlyon. How much do you donate and to whom?
That's an interesting question Jen. Theoretically, we could all give a lot more to the poor. Using that logic, we would keep giving money to the poor until we only had $50 ourselves. Then we would be poor as well! But then we wouldn't have any more money to give to the poor. Then everyone would be poor! So it's a question of balance. Everyone should give some money to the poor. The Government does this through social assistance which we pay for in our taxes. That's why no one is truly poor in Canada. Everyone has at least $50! Dad
Jen, you have a generous heart-and a good point! We should think more about the poor every day.

I agree. I would do the same thing. In fact, i donate about $1,500 per year to different causes.
