What did you do at recess and lunch?

I didn't have friends until grade 6/7. I talked to them every recess and lunch. What did you do at recess and lunch?

  1. Great question Jen. I'm at the age where I love to reminisce. In grade 3 to 7 we played dodge ball, marbles and skipping, among other games. I used to love the many colourful marbles, as well as the game itself. At that time I was discovering the beauty of nature, which would remain all my life. Marbles came in so many colours and types, they reminded me of rocks. I loved rocks and would try to break them open looking for thunder eggs, that hidden pocket of agate and crystals. We also had friends who were very serious rock hounds, though retired by then. They had an amazing collection and would let me go through their boxed collection.
School ground interpersonal dynamics are intricate. I know it can be very hard to make friends. Games help a little.

  2. When a young boy it seems we ran around and blew off energy. As we gor older we used to collect hockey cards. During recess and lunch we would trade them and play games with them. One game was to stand about 6 feet back from a wall. You would each spin a card to the wall. The closest won the other card. There were many variations of the games and kids won or lost dozens of cards at a time. Now that I think about it, I cant recall why we stopped playing. Did it become 'uncool' or did we move up to high school where hanging out was activity enough?! I know that most of my activities were at recess. I almost always went home for lunch.

  3. We used to play square ball at recess. I don't remember how the game was played exactly, but there were four people and you had to bounce the ball on each person's square painted on the ground. Dad
