Have you ever been in a home or worked in one?

Today I went to visit Maple House. I liked the atmosphere of it. Have you ever been in a home or worked in one?

  1. I haven't been to a home, Jen. I'm glad you liked the atmosphere of it. Do you think it would be a nice place to live?
My cousin, who had Parkinson's disease, lived in a very nice home. He liked it there and the staff and volunteers helped him to do a little gardening and other things that he liked to do. I think it was a little difficult to live away from the family, though they were near and visited him every day. As he was 6 foot 5 inches tall, he was too big for them to manage at home. I visited him a lot, he was my favourite cousin. We had long interesting conversations though talking was very difficult and tiring for him. The home made his life easier and safer because they had a ceiling-mounted lift to lift him up out of his bed. It was a good experience for him under the circumstances.

  2. I'm glad that you liked the atmosphere of the Maple House, Jen. I have worked at care home and also had visited many personal clients who were living in homes in the past. Every home is different and as they say "Home is where your heart is". Because I don't have children and am living alone in Canada, so if I live long enough, I will end up living at a care home someday, Jen. Living at care home is quite convenient and make things easier for us when we need it. I hope you will like this future place, if you have decided this is the place for you, Jen.

  3. Jennifer and Felicia and I visited Maple House yesterday in North Surrey. It is the first facility we have visited of this kind and we were pleasantly surprised. It's not as nice as Canuck Place, but better than we expected. Built in 2008, it is run by Fraser Health. There are 20 beds. All are trach and vent, some from accidents and some from neurological disorders like ALS. The staff ratio is 1/3-4 patients. Jennifer could have her van there and her caregivers could visit and take her out. There is a long waiting list, so nothing is going to happen anytime soon. But Jennifer would like her independence. Maybe she is getting tired of her Dad? I know I would if I were her!

  4. Hi Jennifer, I am new to your blog and have enjoyed looking at your artistic talents and reading your questions posted for your followers.

I have been in Senior Care facilities and Hospital Extended care at Eagle Ridge, Coquitlam. I used to to visitations with my standard poodle in 3 facilities with all levels of care. Some didn't know very much but with a stroke of a dog's head or back you could see a glimpse of some emotional or memory connection from their past. It is very theraputic stroking an animal and for those that were verbal they could share their dog stories to their and my delight. I hope that because it says you want your independence that I hope the waitlist isn't too long for you before your dream comes true.
