Hands down Andrea Bocelli is my standout music. His music is almost timeless and I have been following it for many years and travelled to many places like Milan and New York just to see him perform several times. I particularly love it when he pairs up with other artistes like Sarah Brightman and today with his son Matteo. In Nairobi where we ran our famous Deli with the highest epicurean selections from Europe, Bocelli was always playing in the background which perhaps contributed to the awakening of the palate! Like you Jen, I also like Christian music. When I worked at Driving Miss Daisy for quite a few years, every Sunday I religiously took my clients to different churches in Langley/Abbotsford and Chilliwack. We loved ones which had live music where we got to sing and clap and called them “ the happy clappy churches”. Zen
I am practicing my listening to any sound (and silence too!) being “music.” Recently I was in the jungle and I heard bird calls that sounded like garbage trucks backing up (the alarm that lets people know the big truck needs people to pay attention cuz the driver can’t see everything); another bird song sounded like an alarm clock (more the old fashioned, the ‘70’s, ones that did a repetitive and monotonous monotone) , another bird song was similar to a phrase from classical music. Local people’s songs were taken from other bird songs. Or were the bird songs mimicking the people’s?! It got me thinking of car honking, dripping faucets, (love!) rain on roofs, tents umbrellas and rain hats…the waves crashing and rolling in and out on the seashores, my cats MIAOW which is very different from her Purrs! Even speaking voices can be melodic . The Hum of the heater. All these sounds and many more I could add to the list. Instead of hearing Noise, which can get me cranky when I am tired, I am practicing hearing them as sounds. And in hearing their sounds , practicing expanding my listening to hearing it as a form of music.
Has me think of a parrot… if a parrot made the sound of a vacuum cleaner I would think that very clever and I would hear it different than when I turn on 😝 the vacuum cleaner !!
Thanks for the question, Jen, …. I wonder what new sounds of music I might hear today! Wishing you an interesting day!
I am currently enjoying listening to music that I remember from when I was growing up. It’s amazing all the lyrics that you remember! Such useless information to clog your brain with, but fun memories just the same. I like music that gets me moving. Dancing music is always good!
Hi Jennifer, I like all kinds of music: opera, classical, cutting edge contemporary, music from the 1960s and 1970s, choral music and folk music. I like music from different cultures and different countries. But when I am at home I rarely listen to music. I just like hearing the sounds around me.
I like easy listening music Jen. Some people call it elevator music. I know it's boring, but it helps me relax and it's not too intense. Dad
