questions and answers

I can't imagine what it's like to be poor. Could you tell me about it Rita?

  1. Being poor is not hard if almost all your friends were also poor, so I thought it was a normal living condition at that time. But when I went to Christian Methodist School for my junior high was very hard for me. My sister and I rode our bicycle, which I usually sat on the back seat and sometime we took turn when one gets too tired. My sister was two years older than me. We were being teased for being poor because we would wore the same shoes everyday and of course we couldn't buy food from the cafeteria either. We would have the same lunch which was rice cake for years! Some kids were nice to us of course but it was not fun. I was worried whether I would be able to finish my education or not because there wasn't any guarantee my parents would be able to pay the education fee. I also was always afraid to go to store and accidentally would break something and had to pay for it. Even to this day I only go thrift stores to buy clothes or shoes. I still don't enjoy going to a fancy store to entertainment myself, it gives me too much stress.
But there are also many benefit from growing up poor, Jen. I have the understanding how little material possession we need to live comfortable and being happy. I also find when you are poor you have good quality friends than when you have a lot of money. Being poor also give you the freedom to do simple things for yourself without having people ask you why you didn't do this or that etc. Over all, being is hard but not as hard you might think. I remember having less worry because I have never worried people would steal anything from me because there was nothing to steal. Now, I have some money in my saving so I often help my family back home, so far I have helped couple nieces and nephews graduated from high school and business schools. The joyfulness of being able to help others is amazing so for that I'm extremely grateful for not being a poor person anymore!

  4. Wow! I think we should arrange a meeting between you two. You might be the best of friends! Wouldn't that be something Jen? You are both incredible people and we are blessed to have you in our lives. Rita, we can learn a lot from you. The closest I came to being poor was having to wear all my brother's hand me down clothes and ride their old bikes. That was my father's attempt not to spoil us which I think worked! Dad
